This week I painted a Warcaster from the Retribution of Scyrah: Issyria.

Here’s my second attempt at filming a model being painted from start to finish. I tried a new camera angle and I think it works better this way. Without further ado, here’s my video of Brave-Mode Candy from Super Dungeon Explore.

This week I finished painting Brave-Mode Candy and since she’s never seen without her pet kitsune, I finished up Never-Lost Cola as well. Candy is the mascot for Soda Pop Miniatures so I wanted to keep to the traditional colour scheme. I did slightly modify her eyes as I believe the pre-sculpted irises have a tendency to give her a cross-eyed look.

When I was painting the Dragon Blade I noticed that he had a tendency to topple backwards due to his heavy, billowing cloak. I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to make a video to show you how I counterweight models so that they don’t fall over and chip their paint.

It’s taken me almost a year but I’ve finally finished my Feral Nyss unit conversion. I was inspired by the updated Privateer Press conversion policy to convert a unit out of a completely different unit. In this case, I tried to make models that capture the spirit of Croak Raiders, but make them Nyss so that they fit better into my Everblight army.

I started with Circle Tharn Bloodtrackers and swapped their heads for Dark Eldar Wych heads. Then I sculpted tiny gourds and flames for their weapons. I hope that the orange wrist/anklewraps and green warpaint helps to tie them to the Croaks even more.

In my latest video, I demonstrate the layering technique. Layering is a highlighting technique which involves manually painting lighter colours over a darker basecoat, leaving the dark colour in the recesses. It results in a smoother finish than drybrushing, so is better for surfaces such as skin and cloth.

The colours in the original card artwork for the Dragon Blade were various hues of blues and greens. I prefer a more limited palate so I tried to mix up a colour between the green and blue and ended up with aqua.

His cloak provided a good opportunity to demonstrate the layering technique for my next video which I’ll be posting next week.

I play with a few different roleplaying groups using different systems. Although I initially converted him as an Iron Kingdoms character, I’ve ended up using the model with my Dungeons and Dragons 5th ed. group instead.
I started with the Rutger Shaw model. I swapped his sword out for a more traditional one and gave him a shield that I had leftover from my Croak Raiders/Nyss/Bloodtracker conversion.

Donovan is a useful member of the party; he’s witty, charming, he heals them and talks them out of difficult situations…but he’s a womanising swine so the party hates him. Haha!
