Thagrosh Conversion

Original upload date: April 16 2013 – July 28 2013

I disliked Thagrosh’s pointy head, so I tried something quite ambitious for my skill-level at the time. Up until this point, my greenstuffing skills consisted mostly of gap-filling and head/weapon swaps. I think this project, and the positive feedback I received for it, really helped inspire me to try even more ambitious projects, like my Deathstalker and later my Throne of Everblight Horror.

First, I cut away parts of his head and sculpted armour plates and filigree over the top. This is a WIP after I’d finished the edges and begun working the spirals inward.

I decided that I disliked his long loincloth so I cut it off and tried sculpting a new one. It was my first time sculpting cloth, so there’s room for improvement.

Here’s the finished conversion. In summary, after chopping off his pointy head, I added a helmet and filigree. I then chopped off his long cloth and resculpted a shorter one. I added a leather executioner-style hood with a couple of stitches and finally a fur trim to his cloth.

I think the folds in his leather could be better and the fur would have been better if it were a little shaggier. I put this down to my complete inexperience sculpting these textures, so it’s a point I can improve upon next time.

My favourite bits would have to be the way I managed to get his hood to swoop around, adding a little movement to an otherwise static model.

And here he is painted up:

When I started painting him, I became worried that all those browns and neutral colours would look a little dull. So I took advantage of his large chest area to incorporate a tattoo. I found it very tricky to blackline and highlight because it is so small, but I am pleased with the end result.

Strider Deathstalker Conversion

Original upload date: June 1 2013 – September 27 2014

After finishing my first Strider Deathstalker, I wanted to convert a second one to field them in pairs.

Strider Deathstalker

Strider Deathstalker

I had put off the conversion for a while as I knew the Deathstalker would be a difficult mod because she is basically one piece. (the bow with forearm is the only separate bit).

Strider Deathstalker Conversion

I started by removing the head and hair, the left arm, the right side of her cloak and severing the sword arm at the wrist. She looked awful when I was done butchering her, but then I had the fun task of putting her together again.

Strider Deathstalker Conversion

I rotated her sword wrist horizontally and joined it up with a Stone Keeper’s forearm. (I have a little stash of heads and hands from the last time I did a PP bits order as I find these pieces to be the most difficult to sculpt.) I resculpted the upper left arm and then I removed the bow from the left hand. I joined the bow back together again and stuck it onto the model’s back. I had to saw quite deep into the model’s back as I did not want the bow to appear to be “floating” over the top. I used my spare Eiryss3 head from my upcoming mounted Aeryn conversion but I filed off the pattern to make it look less recognisable. I added a lock of hair and filled in the rest of the feathers as well as extending the left side of the cloak to change the model’s profile from a distance.

Here’s the finished product:

I gave her a shoulder pad to emphasise the half-half armoured look.

And here she is with the original for comparison.

Strider Rangers Conversion

Original upload date: April 29 2013 – June 1 2013

My Striders unit features some small conversions:

The model on the far left has a weapon swap. I intend for his ornate bow to mark him out as the leader when I don’t field the UA. The model third from the left has a scabbard and I sculpted a very plain hilt for him to hold. Also, three of the models have sculpted face masks.

Saeryn and Rhyas

Original upload date: April 22 2013

I had painted a slightly different spot colour on each of my warlocks so far, but I decided to colour Rhyas and Saeryn the same to reinforce the bond between them. Also I thought it would be funny to paint the ninjas the brightest yellow I have.

I am very happy with how Saeryn’s face turned out.
