Spawning Vessel Conversion

Original upload date: July 15 2013 – August 25 2013

Perhaps I should clarify that it is the Spawning Vessel Acolyths that are converted, and not the pot itself.

As usual I didn’t want duplicates, and unfortunately the six Acolyths only come in two poses. Luckily they were easy enough to tweak. The one on the left is stock-standard haft-you-in-the-face pose. The middle one I slightly lowered the weapon into a more relaxed stance. I then had to sculpt a new upper arm for her as well as the feathers on her cloak which I damaged as I tried to repose her. The last one involved snipping the hand off the weapon and pinning it back together. I then sculpted back in the missing weapon haft, her upper arm and a rudimentary dagger.

Spawning Vessel Conversion

I had trouble fitting her arm into a natural position and I wasn’t happy with the dagger, so I changed the angle and replaced her dagger with a shard of bone, which I think suits the unit better.

Here’s the finished Spawning Vessel unit:

Spawning Vessel

In my mind, I imagine that the blight affects the Nyss in different ways. Sometimes it’s only a cosmetic change, like the little spikes jutting out of Saeryn’s face. Sometimes it’s a useful change like the legs of the Striders. Sometimes I imagine that the blight is a bad change, like horrible weeping protrusions that cause the bearer discomfort or pain. If the blight is particularly bad, the affected individual may have no choice but the wrap themselves in bandages and march behind the Everblight army, picking the field clear of corpses. Like lepers, they would be shunned for their affliction and their fellow Acolytes of the Vessel would be their only company.

Spawning Vessel Conversion

With that in mind I stained their bandages and painted their robes black to emphasise their cultist look, and their separation from the rest of the army. I had fun painting this unit, but I might have gone a little overboard with the blood splatter!

Thagrosh Conversion

Original upload date: April 16 2013 – July 28 2013

I disliked Thagrosh’s pointy head, so I tried something quite ambitious for my skill-level at the time. Up until this point, my greenstuffing skills consisted mostly of gap-filling and head/weapon swaps. I think this project, and the positive feedback I received for it, really helped inspire me to try even more ambitious projects, like my Deathstalker and later my Throne of Everblight Horror.

First, I cut away parts of his head and sculpted armour plates and filigree over the top. This is a WIP after I’d finished the edges and begun working the spirals inward.

Thagrosh Conversion

I decided that I disliked his long loincloth so I cut it off and tried sculpting a new one. It was my first time sculpting cloth, so there’s room for improvement.

Thagrosh Conversion

Here’s the finished conversion. In summary, after chopping off his pointy head, I added a helmet and filigree. I then chopped off his long cloth and resculpted a shorter one. I added a leather executioner-style hood with a couple of stitches and finally a fur trim to his cloth.

Thagrosh Conversion

I think the folds in his leather could be better and the fur would have been better if it were a little shaggier. I put this down to my complete inexperience sculpting these textures, so it’s a point I can improve upon next time.

Thagrosh Conversion

My favourite bits would have to be the way I managed to get his hood to swoop around, adding a little movement to an otherwise static model.

And here he is painted up:

When I started painting him, I became worried that all those browns and neutral colours would look a little dull. So I took advantage of his large chest area to incorporate a tattoo. I found it very tricky to blackline and highlight because it is so small, but I am pleased with the end result.

Strider Deathstalker Conversion

Original upload date: June 1 2013 – September 27 2014

After finishing my first Strider Deathstalker, I wanted to convert a second one to field them in pairs.

Strider Deathstalker

Strider Deathstalker

I had put off the conversion for a while as I knew the Deathstalker would be a difficult mod because she is basically one piece. (the bow with forearm is the only separate bit).

Strider Deathstalker Conversion

I started by removing the head and hair, the left arm, the right side of her cloak and severing the sword arm at the wrist. She looked awful when I was done butchering her, but then I had the fun task of putting her together again.

Strider Deathstalker Conversion

I rotated her sword wrist horizontally and joined it up with a Stone Keeper’s forearm. (I have a little stash of heads and hands from the last time I did a PP bits order as I find these pieces to be the most difficult to sculpt.) I resculpted the upper left arm and then I removed the bow from the left hand. I joined the bow back together again and stuck it onto the model’s back. I had to saw quite deep into the model’s back as I did not want the bow to appear to be “floating” over the top. I used my spare Eiryss3 head from my upcoming mounted Aeryn conversion but I filed off the pattern to make it look less recognisable. I added a lock of hair and filled in the rest of the feathers as well as extending the left side of the cloak to change the model’s profile from a distance.

Here’s the finished product:

I gave her a shoulder pad to emphasise the half-half armoured look.

And here she is with the original for comparison.

Strider Rangers Conversion

Original upload date: April 29 2013 – June 1 2013

My Striders unit features some small conversions:

Strider Rangers Conversion

The model on the far left has a weapon swap. I intend for his ornate bow to mark him out as the leader when I don’t field the UA. The model third from the left has a scabbard and I sculpted a very plain hilt for him to hold. Also, three of the models have sculpted face masks.

Spell Martyr Conversion

Original upload date: April 20 2013

When I first read about Spell Martyrs, I imagined them busting ribs Alien-style just as they are consumed by their Warlock’s magic. So I wanted my Martyrs to be mostly intact, pre-rib-burst. My third Martyr will eventually be the original sculpt.

Spell Martyr Conversion

The female is based on Cylena Raefyll’s torso with the original Martyr legs and arms. The male is the original with a resculpted chest.

Angelius Conversion

Original upload date: April 20 2013 – March 16 2015

I love to use the Angelius in games, even if he is a little top heavy.

Angelius

In order to convert my second Angelius, I chopped the middle part of the tail off  and then sculpted a new one wrapping around a (bark chip) rock. The core of the tail was made of aluminium foil to save on weight, putty and to act as a frame so that I could get the positioning right.

Angelius Conversion

I cut away the wing webbing close to his body and repositioned this wings curled around closer, like a perched gargoyle.

Angelius Conversion

I might even prefer him to the original, he certainly topples over less often!

Forsaken Conversion

Original upload date: April 17 2013

I wanted at least two Forsaken for my Abby list but I don’t like to have identical models, so I had a go at modifying the second one.

Forsaken

At this point I was still very new to sculpting so I needed a reference to compare size and shapes. I based the new head off Vayl1 and the new arm off Annyssa Ryvaal’s.

Shepherd Conversion

Original upload date: April 17 2013 – July 12 2015

I painted my first Shepherd to have a bright red cape lining.

Shepherd

I came to greatly value the Shepherd’s presence on the battlefield, both in healing a much needed beast and managing fury. I don’t think there’s a better one-point option for Legion. I wanted another, so two years later I converted a second Shepherd.

Shepherd Conversion

To distinguish her from the original sculpt I wanted to remove her hood and make her hold the weapon in both hands. I gave her Saeryn’s head and Cylena Raefyll’s arms which I modified to hold the scythe instead of her sword.

Shepherd Conversion

This conversion looks simple but was actually surprisingly fiddly. First I had to remove the head, arms and a substantial part of the cloak to go with them. Cylena’s arms end halfway up the bicep so I pinned them into position and sculpted back in the rest. Getting them into the correct position was very tricky because I had to gauge the correct arm length and ensure that the angles matched up so that the haft would sit correctly in both hands. I resculpted the top part of the cloak and added a hood from Eiryss3.

Shepherd Conversion

Here they are, side by side for comparison:
