I slightly converted Princess Malya because I didn’t like the fact that she has two sets of ears (although I get that it’s an homage to her Relic Knights incarnation…).

Croak Raiders Conversion: Feral Nyss

It’s taken me almost a year but I’ve finally finished my Feral Nyss unit conversion. I was inspired by the updated Privateer Press conversion policy to convert a unit out of a completely different unit. In this case, I tried to make models that capture the spirit of Croak Raiders, but make them Nyss so that they fit better into my Everblight army.

I started with Circle Tharn Bloodtrackers and swapped their heads for Dark Eldar Wych heads. Then I sculpted tiny gourds and flames for their weapons. I hope that the orange wrist/anklewraps and green warpaint helps to tie them to the Croaks even more.

Iron Kingdoms Roleplay Character Conversion: Donovan

I play with a few different roleplaying groups using different systems. Although I initially converted him as an Iron Kingdoms character, I’ve ended up using the model with my Dungeons and Dragons 5th ed. group instead.

I started with the Rutger Shaw model. I swapped his sword out for a more traditional one and gave him a shield that I had leftover from my Croak Raiders/Nyss/Bloodtracker conversion.

Donovan is a useful member of the party; he’s witty, charming, he heals them and talks them out of difficult situations…but he’s a womanising swine so the party hates him. Haha!

Eiryss Conversion

The Retribution Starter Box comes with everyone’s favourite elf sniper: Eiryss1. I’m looking forward to seeing her on my own side for once! I was never a fan of how her hood smooshed up her face, so I knew I needed a head swap. This coincided with an update to PP’s conversion policy. For those who have not read it yet, the official rules are:

·Models cannot be converted in such a way that any part of the model represents the intellectual property of any party except Privateer Press, including copyrighted logos, symbols, iconic elements, or other iconography.
·The majority of a converted model’s volume must be composed of parts from Privateer Press models. To avoid confusion, the conversion should include iconic elements of the model it is intended to represent.
·A weapon on a model can be converted as long as the conversion represents the same type of weapon (e.g., the model’s axe is still an axe and not a hammer).
·A weapon can be completely swapped for another weapon as long as the new weapon is of the same type (e.g., an axe for an axe, a rifle for a rifle).
·A weapon cannot be removed unless it is replaced by another weapon; a weapon cannot be added unless it is replacing a removed weapon.
·If a conversion uses a Privateer Press upgrade kit for the model it is intended to represent, all parts of the upgrade kit must be clearly visible on the model.
·Miniatures must be mounted on appropriately sized round-lipped bases. Added scenic details can overhang the base’s edge but must not obscure the edge in a way that makes accurate measuring during a game difficult or impossible.
·A player cannot use a model as a proxy (stand-in) for another model.
·Any conversions must be clearly pointed out to the opponent before the game, and the end result of any conversion must be clearly identifiable as the intended model. The golden rule of converting models for tournament play is simply this: If the EO cannot independently, easily, and accurately determine which model your conversion represents, the model is not tournament legal.

In summary, the most significant change to the policy is the second point: in the past, at least 50% of the original model was required, this has been changed to requiring at least 50% Privateer Press parts. This means that you can now make a model using no pieces of the original! I’m getting excited, this is waaay more flexible and I’m already getting crazy ideas. Additionally we now know that we can use other manufacturer’s parts which is something I was always hesitant to do. No longer! This really is a big deal for a converter like me. Anyway, back to Eiryss1… I wanted to give her a ponytail flowing in the wind to emphasise the movement of her cape. I found a head in one of my other bits boxes (from a Dark Eldar Wych) and after removing the topknot from the head, I sculpted in hair and a lowered hood.

Croak Raiders Conversion: Feral Nyss

In the past I have always used the majority of the original model in my conversions, and all PP parts or putty in the hopes of disambiguation. However, when the new conversion rules came into effect I was inspired to try something outside of my comfort zone. I decided to turn a Minions unit into Nyss, and the Croak Raiders seemed like a good fit. I’m planning to paint these girls up with green caustic war paint (to account for their Vitriol rule and as a visual reminder that they are Croaks). I will probably get these knocked back from tournaments, it will be up to the TO, but I honestly don’t play competitively very often anyway.

Without further ado, here are my Feral Nyss Raiders:

I like the idea that the unit is primitive (cannibalistic warrior women!) to reflect their Minions-background, so the Circle Tharn Bloodtrackers were a good starting point. Their bodies are the same size as Nyss, and they have cool bone shards that help with the feral look. I needed to remove their shields, as they are not proper Croak weaponry, and remove their heads as that is easily the most identifiable part of the Tharn model. Removing all of that hair was the hardest part of these conversions, especially since I don’t own a dremel tool so it was all done by hand.

The Raider on the left, the leader, shows all of the basic changes that I did to the unit. After removing the shield I had to resculpt the attachment point. I removed the heads and bulky hair and replaced them with Dark Eldar Wych heads. These are elfy and help with the bone-shard feral look I was after. I also added a sculpted Oil Gourd to her belt so that all weaponry was shown on the figure. Raider number 2 has these basic changes as well as fire sculpted onto her thrown weapon. It was very difficult to saw the head off and leave the attached weapon intact. Raider 3 has a sculpted flaming brand added and Raider 4 has flames on her weapon as well.

Raider 5 is the same sculpt as 2. I re-angled her throwing arm, drilled the weapon haft out of her hand and replaced it with an Oil Gourd, and also raised the angle on her other arm. Raider 6 is the same sculpt as 3. I changed the angle on her weapon arm and replaced her closed fist with an open hand I had in my bitz box. I put another Oil Gourd into this hand. Raider 7 is the same sculpt as 4. I did little alterations to this body variant as I already liked the movement of her throwing action. I just added flames to her weapon.

For Raider 8 (sculpt 2), I cut the original weapon away and swapped it with Raider 9’s arm (sculpt 3). I then added a flaming brand, closing the fingers around it. I hope it looks like she is setting her weapon alight. Raider 9 (sculpt 3) has Raider 8’s original weapon. I gave this one a hood because some of the Croaks have leather hoods. Raider 10 (sculpt 4) also has a hood and a flaming weapon. Those tiny gourds were especially difficult to sculpt!

I’ve never converted a whole unit before and I doubt I will again any time soon! I know a lot of people will complain that they are not recognisable, but as I’ve said, once I paint them with Croak coloured war-paint I hope it will be a little more obvious.

Throne of Everblight Conversion: The Horror

It’s done! Despite the setbacks and losing my enthusiasm for this conversion, I finally finished my converted Throne of Everblight:

I originally nicknamed it “The Monster” but hubby has talked me into renaming it “The Horror” as a nod to Lovecraft’s “The Dunwich Horror” (since the beastie bears a resemblance to Yog-Sothoth). One of the reasons that the conversion has taken so long is that I designed it as a series of micro-assemblies to make painting easier. This means that I constantly needed to make sure that the parts were aligned.

I received a lot of love for this conversion on the forums and on the Legion of Everblight facebook page. It was even mentioned on the Blight Makes Right podcast. It really inspires to me continue attempting these sorts of ambitious projects, so thank you!

Kallus Conversion: Kallyse, Rage of Everblight

Kallus’s attrition play-style appeals to me but his model didn’t. Specifically, I disliked his oversized shoulder pads and enormous torso. Even these pictures don’t do justice to the scale of that thing!

I decided to remove the torso and turn Kallus into a chick to better fit in with the rest of my sexy Legion girls. I was planning on removing the shoulder pads altogether but then I became worried that I was skirting a little too close to the 50% original model requirement for legal PP conversions (as of reposting, this rule is no longer a requirement). That’s when I noticed that Kallus’s shoulder pads are effectively two sectioned armour plates and I decided to try removing the larger one of the halves.

I’m quite happy with it; I think it retains the original’s aesthetic but it will be much smaller and more feminine. As I was discussing my ideas with the hubby it annoyed me when I had to refer to my model as “Kallus”. My model isn’t Kallus any more so I needed a new name to reflect my incarnation of the Warlock. So Kallus, Wrath of Everblight became Kallyse, Rage of Everblight. Here’s my first attempt at horns, using my last spare Eiryss3 head as the base.

And here’s the finished conversion. I’m really, really happy about how she turned out. She might be my best yet.

And here’s the finished model. She gave me a bit of trouble… I had to reassemble her (include resculpting and attaching a new horn) and I repainted her when I wasn’t happy with my attempt at OSL. I’m still not completely happy with the light effects but it’s a skill I can work on in the future.

Iron Kingdoms Roleplay Character Conversion: Aeryn Asir

This is my character for an Iron Kingdoms game that I’ve just started. Aeryn Asir is a Highwayman/Mage Hunter, although I’m just using the classes as a template so theme-wise she’s more of a Light Cavalry Assassin.

Aeryn was born to a Seeker of Scyrah who was searching for one of the lost gods in Khador. The family stayed in Khador when the Iosans locked themselves away, so Aeryn has never seen her people’s homeland. She has simple needs: she just wants a dry place to sleep, fresh food and above all else she looks after her horse; Mishka.

I used the Eiryss model because I really like the sculpt but because Aeryn is a cavalry character, I need a second version on a mount. So I’ve bought another Eiryss and the Jeremiah Kraye model to combine into mounted Aeryn.

This was my first conversion where I really baulked at the cost. I’ll think twice before playing another mounted character… This is also my first attempt at curly hair. I’m satisfied with it but I think next time I’ll try to put more texture into the curls. My original plan was to have Aeryn’s cloak folding behind her, but I didn’t want to obscure all of the nifty details on Kraye’s horse. I figured the material looks stiff enough to drape out behind.

In the last few months she’s proven herself to be a formidable assassin. She’ll scale sheer walls, sneak in undetected and blow her enemies apart before they can react. She seems an odd fit for the mercenary company as she doesn’t care about the gold at all. She clearly has her own agenda and only time will tell what that is.

Bane Riders

I did a very small conversion on my Bane Riders. I changed the angles of the leader mount’s rear legs so that it’s rearing up above the others. The Denny bit on the base is an extra I had laying around. I was going to use it as my pDenny but in the end I preferred the plastic one. Now it will become a bronze statue seeping into the sludge. I also swapped the arms of two riders to avoid duplicates.
